A full day of talks, panel discussions, hands-on activities, cooking demos, music, entertainers, food and other fun stuff, all about seaweed!

The California Seaweed Festival is an in-person FREE family friendly event celebrating the seaweed diversity of California! The festival will showcase seaweed uses and applications in art, cooking, farming, science, sustainable technology, and conservation. At the all-day event, we will have booths, exhibits, workshops, galleries, and hands-on activities to immerse you and your family in seaweed fun and knowledge. We also encourage the use of masks when in a crowded and enclosed areas, following the California set guidelines.

The California Seaweed Festival is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization all donations to the festival help the festival continue to grow and be held each year!

About this event

The California Seaweed Festival main event on Saturday October 19th, will be right on the Eureka waterfront at the Wharfinger Building and Marina! Stunning Bay views will be the backdrop for panel discussions, presentations, our vendor marketplace, exhibits, workshops and activities around all things seaweed. Of course, there will be food, drinks, music, mermaids and magical creatures! In the marina, we’ll have tours of the biodiversity on the floats and pilings, tours of the Research Vessel Coral Sea and The Madaket taking festival goers on tours of aquaculture sites and local history in Humboldt Bay. We are thrilled to present a meticulously crafted program that will leave you inspired and captivated.

This is an event for the whole family to enjoy, learn, celebrate, and have the incredible opportunity to connect with esteemed seaweed experts. Join us for an unforgettable experience! The California Seaweed Festival is a free event, with a suggested donation of $15.00.

Festival Details!

The free full-day, family-friendly Festival will be at the Wharfinger Building on the Eureka waterfront, packed with seaweed activities! Highlights include:

  • A vendor marketplace with seaweed and ocean themed products.

  • Workshops and activities for the whole family, including cyanotyping, printing, tech demos including Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture and ROVs, seaweed skincare, a seaweed touch tank, and more.

  • Cooking demos by chefs Maylin Chávez and Woody Cabello-Penn.

  • Panel discussions on Innovations in Aquaculture, Biodiversity on the North Coast and throughout the state, Seaweed at the Intersection of Advocacy and Economics, and an Indigenous People’s Forum.

  • Scientists and industry professionals will present short talks, educational booths and a poster session.

  • Boat tours on the Madaket, including a visit to Humboldt Bay ProvidenSea Farm and an ROV deployment to check on the lines. Space is limited and a small ticket fee applies.

  • Tours of the research vessel Coral Sea.

  • Entertainment including live music and a mermaid.

  • Food trucks and a beer garden, both featuring innovative uses of seaweed.

Enjoy live music and mermaids all day. Go“dock-pooling” around the marina with a marine biologist guide and take a tour inside the Coral Sea research vessel and too many more fun things to mention!

6pm - 9pm: The Sustainable Seafoods Soirée, in collaboration with Fed by Blue, and PBS, will feature a special screening and panel discussion about "Hope in the Water" a docu-series highlighting how innovations on the water could not only feed us but help save our threatened seas and fresh waterways. This ticketed event includes sustainable seafood small bites and drinks. Seafood includes all foods from the water — fish, shellfish, and sea vegetables -- and provide some of the most nutritious and planet-friendly food options. This will be followed by a discussion with panelists from the series and blue foods industry with an opportunity to taste sustainably produced seafood and drinks. This ticketed event includes sustainable seafood small bites and drinks.
