Kick off Friday with a Workshop and Tour on Cal Poly Humboldt campus!
11am - 2pm: Join California Sea Grant and Connecticut Sea Grant for a dive into the economics of seaweed farming in the "Business Planning for Seaweed Farming" workshop. The event is in-person and free to the public, from 11am-2pm. Space is limited. Register here. .
2pm and 3pm Following the workshop, join us for a Tour of the Rou Dalagurr Food Sovereignty Lab and Traditional Ecological Knowledge Institute on the Cal. Poly. Humboldt campus.
In the afternoon, head to the Samoa Peninsula for more activities. 4pm - 5:30pm: Choose between two tours (space is limited):
Explore the tidepools in Humboldt Bay and learn about decades of research by the late Prof. Frank Shaughnessy. This tour will be led by expert psychologists who will share fascinating stories and identifying seaweed species where they live.
Visit aquaculture facilities on the Samoa Peninsula. Tours will be led by Sunken Seaweed and Hog Island Oyster. You'll learn about local macroalgae cultivation and shellfish production. Space is limited and registration is required with a donation of any amount.

The Seaweed Speakeasy now an unmissable California Seaweed festival tradition, networking event kicks off at The Humboldt Bay Social Club is located on the rugged Samoa Peninsula, tucked in the dunes between the Pacific and Humboldt Bay. We will be in The Hangar, a former WWII airplane Hangar, which opens onto a patio with fire pits under the night sky. What a spot to enjoy seaweed-rich bites and drinks and make connections with seaweed enthusiasts from all sectors!
Just steps from the Bay, this spot is perfect for our pre-event tours of wild seaweed populations and local aquaculture businesses before the party starts.
Keynote speaker Prof. Tom Mumford will share his insights into macroalgae aquaculture as well as years of experience with kelp restoration, conservation and biodiversity. Enjoy light appetizers by chef Casandra Kelly and seaweed beer by Overtime Brewing of Fort Bragg.
